This is essential for optimum results because deficiencies cause major losses (a lot of deficiencies are subclinical and do not show till it’s too late) and are often a problem even with chemical supplements or lick blocks that are really not preferred by alpacas.
The trace element Selenium is an essential factor in the diet of Alpacas.
It has been shown that most alpacas will not lick nutrients from lick blocks. So ingestion of Selenium by these very valuable animals has to be via pastures soil or oral formulations.
Selenium deficiency manifests itself in many ways, obvious systems are ill thrift, low fleece weights, poor reproductive performance, resulting in fewer cria weaned low birth weights & poor weight gain in crias, the incidence of nutritional muscular dystrophy (white muscle disease) or tying up in adult stock are also increased in Selenium deficient animals.
Supplementing Alpacas with Selenium will improve fertility in both male & females especially maidens and will improve all round nutritional health.
