Selenium is an essential nutrient in cattle and sheep (and alpacas, horses, dogs humans, you name it ). Vast areas of Australian grazing land are selenium deficient, particularly those fertilized heavily with superphosphate, because sulphates compete with selenium for absorption at the plant and animal level.
Lush pasture with high clover content is likely to be highly deficient because legumes do not absorb Selenium efficiently. Granite soil pastures are especially likely to be selenium deficient.
Signs of selenium deficiency in stock include poor fertility. Retained placenta and abortions, poor growth rates and ‘white muscle disease’. White Muscle disease will show up as stiffness, weakness, and reluctance to stand and in severe cases calves, lambs and most other young animals may suddenly collapse and die.
