Trace minerals are required by horses in miniscule amounts, and as such the vital roles as essential nutrients are often overlooked. Selenium is an essential part of the diet of the horse. Pastures, stored grains and hay often contain inadequate dietary Selenium.
Selenium deficiency can result in infertility in both mares and stallions, poor growth rates in foals and weaners, and degenerative muscle disease in foals and adults.
Selenium deficiency can cause "tying up" in horses, it may also be a contributing cause of clover founder due to low Selenium in clover.
The anti-oxidant and thyroxine producing roles of Selenium are vital for training and racing.
