What is selenium?
Selenium is a mineral required by living organisms in very small amounts. Most commercial feeds produced in Australia are Selenium deficient. Selenium is an essential element that must be supplemented on a regular basis, as the body does not store it. There is no doubt that a shortfall of this mineral can affect the animal physically to the point of death in some cases.
What does selenium do in the body?
Selenium has many important functions in the body but its principal function is that of an antioxidant, along with other anti-oxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E. Because of this Selenium plays a role in cancer prevention, prevention of heart disease and maintenance of a strong immune system. In addition Selenium helps delay the onset of fatigue during exercise. Selenium is also responsible for the normal growth patterns in animals. It is hard to believe that oxygen is potentially the most destructive substance in the body and is constantly attempting tissue destruction just like oxygen and water cause iron to rust. If it weren't for the body's anti-oxidant systems such as Selenium, an animal would do just that - rust and die.

Selenium also is responsible for controlling the build up of peroxides derived from fat breakdown during exercise. These peroxides are potentially very damaging to athletic performance.
Growth and Body Building
General body metabolism is controlled in part by thyroxine a hormone produced by the thyroid gland. Selenium is also involved in the control of body metabolism through its role in converting the inactive form of thyroxine (T4) to the active form (T3). At time of growth in animals or the athletic activity of training or racing, organic selenium will assist in performance through its effect on thyroxine which in turn has positive body building effects.
